2018 Spring Trip - USS Yorktown

Every year our pack plans one big trip, like Space Camp or spending the night at an Aquarium, where we get a chance to get away from Atlanta and do something memorable that the kids might not get a chance to do otherwise. This year takes to Patriots Point in Charleston, home of the USS Yorktown.

The What

Eating in the Yorktown mess hall, sleeping in the Yorktown bunks, a tour of the ship, an educational oceanography session, and more! See the attached Overnight Camping brochure for details.

The Where and the When

Patriot's Point is located at 40 Patriots Point Rd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464, about 330 miles (5+ hours) east of Marietta (https://goo.gl/maps/SieEzWuTomP2). We are attending Saturday, March 10 through Sunday, March 11. Our entire group much check in by 11am, so please on arriving by no later than 10:30am Saturday morning. Many people leave Friday night and spend the night in Charleston so they're not rushed Saturday morning.

How Much Is It, and How do I Sign Up?

The cost for overnight stay is $76 per person, whether they're an adult or child. Please note that only those who are 6 or older at the time of the stay may attend.

The Patriots Point team has said that their goal is to have one adult of the same gender as each child attending. They know this goal isn't possible for a group like ours, but families with more children than adults may want to consider inviting a grandparent or aunt/uncle along, and families with more adults than children attending, please let me know if you'd be willing to volunteer to offset one of the extra children. In any case, every child should be supervised at all times while at the Yorktown.

To sign up:

    • First: reply back with an email to let me know! I'd love to know the number of people and your scout's den for planning purposes, and to follow up if I don't hear from you later. There will also be an event on the scoutbook calendar you can follow. These things are helpful, but won't sign you up.

    • Second and More Importantly: Fill out the attached form, and bring it with payment (cash, or check made out to "Pack 675") on December 1st at the next pack meeting. I (Bryan Davis, your friendly Camping Coordinator) will be waiting in the adult room to take your signup form and payment. Please fill out the form and bring it with you along with your payment, ready to go. It really keeps the line moving if people aren't filling out forms or writing checks at the table. This will sign you up!

    • (I know the timing is terrible, asking for payment in December. Unfortunately that's how it goes with these big spring trips; we need to pay them well in advance to get our spots.)

    • Third: As always, Health Forms A&B and photocopies of a health insurance card are required for *anyone* going on an overnight trip (not just scouts, but parents, siblings, grandparents, etc). We will be collecting new forms for everyone in January, so please wait until the new year to turn them in.

If you can't be at the December 1st pack meeting or cannot make payment that night, please reply back to me so we can make other arrangements through your den leader.

What Should I Bring?

Please read through the attached brochure for recommended items to bring. Note especially that they have requested no outside food or drink aboard the ship.

TL;DR

Spend the night on the USS Yorktown! Sleep in their berths, eat in their mess hall, March 10-11, 2018.
